France
Rare French cashmere shawl woven on a silk and wool drawloom called Moon Shawl and dating from the Romantic period. A square shawl with a cream background, intended for the elegant ladies of the Restoration and often in a wedding basket, whose design deliberately imitates Indian shawls. Very fine cut-out throw weave with a large central moon and quarter moons at the corners with Mille fleurs motifs in predominantly blue, red, green and saffron. Cream tapered fringes on two sides. These moon shawls can be seen in French fashion plates from the Directoire period around 1800. Soft shawl with a few tiny moth holes, visible only in transparency. Otherwise clean, not missing and in very good general condition, both in terms of colour and conservation.
