Circa 1785
France
A sack back gown, coat and skirt in salmon and yellow changing taffeta Florence silk. The gown has an à l’anglaise whalebone laced front bodice, three-quarter length sleeves and small à la Watteau pleats in the back ending in a train. Wide, pleated, zig-zagging ruffles underlined by fine fringed matching trimmings. Skirt with side drawstrings and cotton chintz fabric on the not visible areas and the bodice lining. Skirt lining in cream silk pongee. The two slits on the back of the skirt are used to roll up the skirt à la Polonaise. With its very modern structure for the period, its Anglican inspiration, its compères and its Florence taffeta, it evokes representations of French harbour costumes from the work of the famous painter Joseph Vernet. A few small water spots at the end of the train behind, the taffeta has no holes or stains. Very good condition of colour and conservation. A museum’s piece.
