Vintage Design
Amazing dining table by Gio Ponti from the early 1940s, Italy. It has a rectangular top in veneered Italian walnut with underneath four tapered fluted legs. A similar striking fluted, grooved pattern can also be found in the edges of the table. It comes with a certificate from the Gio Ponti institute. This particular Ponti trademark can also be found in the interior of the rectorate at the University of Padua, which he designed in the early 1940s. The similar fluted, grooved motif also returns in the furniture designed by Ponti for the Villa La Quiete dellAlpino in Stresa, which was the home of Gianni Mazzocchi, the editor of Domus magazine. The table is in overall good condition, with normal wear and tear consistent with age and use. References: Domus, March 1940, pp. 82-83 for technical drawings.
