Precious and rare quilted Indian woodblock quilt dating from the Louis XVI period. Manufacture unidentified but possibly from the Indian basin Alsace, Germany, Switzerland. Percale printed in reserve with mauve semis on a white background. Borders with medallions of bucolic saynettes on a brown background: a chimney sweep carrying a generous bouquet of roses. In the corners are four spandrels with mirrored medallions surmounted by plant friezes. The reverse is a beige cotton percale (stained and soiled) with large diamond stitching and very light wadding. Note a small rust stain on the right side and consolidation of the Indian in the borders by small colour patches (mainly in the medallions), which is hardly visible to the naked eye. Good overall suture condition and preserved vegetal colours.
