France
A Blouse Biaude for a french worker in indigo-dyed glazed cotton, which has retained its original finish. A rare example of French folk art, this type of blouse with festive facings was worn by men over their shirts and waistcoats. Very fine stitching, with pleating at the collar and small beading on the split front and shoulder tabs. The collar and cuffs are fastened with original black glass (onyx?) buttons. The glaze was obtained by applying wax, starch and sometimes egg white, which was then passed through a calender (between two cylinfres), then polished with an agate bead! Exceptional condition for its age.
